But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. To help Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumés and interviewing skills."

In this memo the president claims that we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumes and interviewing skill. To support this claim the president cites the last year's graduating seniors of Green Moutain College(GMC) as an indication of the improved effect of business courses. As it stands the memo relies on a series of dubious assumptions, and is therefore unconvincing.
In the first place, the fail to indicate whether GMC experienced the high level of umployment ditectly due to the fact that GMC has more business courses and more job counselors. It is possible, for instance, that GMC's graduating seniors will remain a high level even if they donnot accpet the business courses and job counselors. If true, the the president's memo will have little sense. On the other hand, the GMC experienced the correlation between the course of action mentioned above and the high level empoyment, then this fact would lend considerable support to the president's conclusion that proposed action have something to with the employment of graduating seniors.
In the second place, the mere fact that business courses and job conunselors has served to the more job offers is the scant evidence the Mira Vista College(MVC) would achieve its by following the GMC's example. Perhaps due to the the differnt standard which uesed to measure the level of the percentage of employment. Or perhaps just last year GMC's graduating seniors had more offers, this single sample is insufficient to draw any conclusion about the long-term employement condition. In short, lacking evidence that the conditions on the two college's graduating seniors are relatively similar, the president cannot convince me on the basis of the GMC's experience that the proposed course of action would be effective in attaining the MVC's goal'
In the third place, the president assumes that the proposed actions are both necessary and sufficient for incresing the MVC's overall employment, yet the president provide no evidence to substantiate either assumption. In all likelihood, the empolyment is a function not only of business courses and job conselors but also of the actual ability that plays a pivotal role in their job offers. Perhaps, MVC can improve its employment by other means--such as houlding some large seniors introducing meetings, or connect more frequently with the empoyer companies. For that matter, if MCV can acctually find out the factors resulting in their low empolyement, their would invariably accept more job offers. In short, since the memo has not ruled out all other possible scenarios that might serve to improve the MVC's employment, I simply cannot take the memo's recommendation seriously.
In conclusion, the memo is unconvincing as it stands. To strenghen the recommendaiton, the president must provide more compelling evidence that offering more courses in business and hiring more counselors will actually help the MVC improve its employment.
