TOPIC: ARGUMENT44 - The following is a recommendation from the business manager of Monarch Books.

"Monarch Books should open a café in its store to attract more customers and better compete with Regal Books, which recently opened a café. Monarch, which has been in business at the same location for more than twenty years, has a large customer following because it is known for its wide selection of books on all subjects. Opening the café would clearly attract more customers. The café would require relatively little space. Space could be made for the café by discontinuing the children's book section, which will likely become less popular given that the last national census indicated a significant decline in the percent of the population who are under age ten."

In this recommendation, the writer suggests that Monarch Books should open a cafe to attract more customers. To substantiate this suggestion, the writer provides several reasons:1, the competitor Regal Books possesses a cafe;2, the cafe would not take much space;3, the space for the cafe can be made from discontinuing the children's book section, which will become less favorable according to a national census. Although these reasons seem sound to bolster the author's claim, the suggestion actually cannot stand as an organic whole and is unconvincing as it stands.
To start with, the mere fact that Regal Books has a cafe does not necessarily urges Monarch Books should also facilitate one. It is possible that the cafe at Regal Books does not cater to people's needs and even make people dislike Regal Books. Even if the cafe at Regal Books is successful and well received, we cannot guarantee the same thing will happen for Monarch Books. Because Monarch Books has large customer following for twenty years without a cafe, we can get to a point that people value some other important factors instead of a cafe. Without further investigation on these points, the writer cannot convince me that Monarch Books is in urgent need of a cafe to compete with Regal Books.
Secondly, the fact that the cafe takes relatively little space lends scant credibility to facilitate one. This space could be better used other than establish a cafe, and we should investigate what the most urgent need for customers is. Moreover, it is common sense that the smell of coffee would spread ubiquitously, perhaps there are some people who are allergic to this smell and they would probably choose not to come again. It is even more possible that the cafe serves coffees that smell bad, which will make a larger customer loss. Lacking evidence showing the establishment of a cafe is most adoptable way, the author's claim is problematic.
Third, discontinuing the children's book section is the most dubious point. Although the national census indicated a significant decline in the percent of the population who are under age ten, it is entire likely that juvenile population is on an increase in local areas. Besides, the writer just says that the percentage of children under ten is decreasing, while the actual number is possibly on an increase, which calls for large demand of children's books. Even if the actual number of kids under ten is on a decline, it may not bring down the sales of children's books. It is very likely that parents or other adults would purchase them. Lacking this very vital information, the author's suggestion of closing down the children's section is totally groundless.
In a brief summary, this recommendation is totally unconvincing as the author presents several flawed reasons. To make this argument sounder, we need to be informed about the information of the cafe at Regal Books. To better assess this suggestion, we also require a deep investigation of the effect of discontinuing the children's book section and the alternative usage of the saved space.
