1.Why people attend college?
After graduation from high school, young graduates are facing a tough choice, either to directly enter the work force or to go on acquiring knowledge in college. In my country, most people who have the choice choose the latter one. Attending college allows them to obtain further knowledge, enrich their life experience and make themselves more competitive in the society.
An old Chinese saying goes, “Keep learning till the last second of your life." And that's the motto for most chinese people. There is far more knowledge in this world than one can ever learn in a lifetime, and in comparison with the whole life, the years most people spend in schooling are as short as a blink, so every single chance to prolong this period would be precious. Colleges give its students opportunities to specialize and advance that can be offered from nowhere else. With college education, one can understand life and this world in a new depth, it would be a regret to live the rest of one's life without such illumination.
Additionally, college life is a unique experience for one to have in life. It is insisted by a number of people that working experience is more valuable than life in college. But don't forget, that being in college does not mean you can't work at the same time. Unlike work, college experience is more of a one-off chance, it's something that you can only enjoy the most at a certain age. Of course you can still enter college when you're old, but it would not be the same as when you're young and energetic.
Finally, a college degree makes a person much more competitive than those who don't have one. For example, when a company desires employees who are competent in computer technology, even if two applicants have the same test results, the one that possesses credentials from a famous university is more likely to be hired. Sometimes a college degree also means higher salaries, richer choices and better luck with love affairs.
2.Are parents the best teachers?
Parents, as the most reliable adults for most children, act an unignoreable role in education. Therefore, they naturally become the children's first guides to this dazzling world. It is believed by a number of educators that the children's dependency on their parents makes them the best teachers. But that is totally wrong, teaching is a complex process, parents may be the most effective teachers, but they're certainly not the best teachers because of their lack of academic knowledge, teaching methods and their tendency to spoil their own children.
Most parents don't work in academic fields, even for those who do, they usually specializes in one field only. Therefore, parents aren't usually capable of teaching students the rich and various knowledge that they demand. According to a survey done by Shenzhen University in 2001, most parents tend to lead their descendants through "the path that they've walked", whether cautiously or not. Doctors want their children grow to be doctors, teachers want their children grow to be teachers... So having parents act the teaching role potentially limits the children's future options.
Additionally, most parents haven't been trained to use the appropriate teaching methods as professional teachers do. Even though a parent may be knowledgeable in a certain field, without the right means of teaching, he might misguide or upset the child. For example, in China, a large number of parents hold the belief that the stricter they are to children, the more outstanding the children shall be. Therefore, when they're educating their kids, they criticize but seldom praise. And such means result in upsetting children and even causing hypochondria.
Finally, according to the survey mentioned previously, most parents also tend to spoil their children. In China, the one-child policy has made every child the precious of his family. As a result, kids get spoiled. Parents often ignore the mistakes the kids have made and even let them throw tantrums whenever they want! For education, we need real teachers who know the teaching tricks to help the kids grow mature.
